Weeki Wachee

Today, Mermaids are all the rage, but the history really starts in 1946, when Newton Perry, a former U.S. Navy man who trained Navy Frogmen to swim underwater in World War II, scouted out Weeki Wachee as a good site for a new business idea. Newt then recruited pretty girls and trained them to swim with air hoses and smile at the same time. He taught them to drink Grapette, a non-carbonated beverage, eat bananas underwater and do aquatic ballets. They have been a hit every since.

Now, Mermaids perform at resorts, bars, and even at kids parties. Some great examples where professional Mermaids perform are at the Denver Aquarium, in Las Vegas, at the Tenshou-Kyousha Shrine in Japan, at the Big Bend Power Plant in Florida, at the Aquarium of the Pacific in California, and many more places.

It’s estimated that more than 1000 Mermaids are employed in the USA today, with the demand growing. And enterprising Mermaids are developing swim programs for kids and adults everywhere. From just having fun, to working with children, there’s a world of possibilities out there for you to be a Mermaid. Make your childhood dreams become true today.

Certified Basic Free Diver

Overview

One of the most important skills you’ll learn during your Mermaid program is free diving. As a Mermaid, you’ll enter the underwater world quietly, on your own terms, staying as long as your breath allows. It takes practice, patience, and self discipline. Freediving is about inward power and control. Once you’ve completed this section of your course, you’ll be fully certified as a Freediver.

Becoming Like a Dolphin

When you’re first starting out, you’ll likely feel clumsy. But with practice, you’ll learn to coordinate your entire body into a single swimming muscle. Learning how to undulate is the secret and joy of monofin freediving, and it’s the key to your success as a mermaid.

Total Body Exercise

One of the things you’ll realize early on is that a good monofin stroke comes from core body flexibility, strength and solid mechanics. You can’t undulate with a stiff, tight, back. You’ll need to develop these muscles in ways you never thought possible. Your body will ripple from just under your clavicle, through your ribcage to your abdomen and lower back, and then to the hips, where the motion is magnified to deliver power to the fin. Your legs and fin translate the body’s core signal into a propulsive force.

There are many drills to learn the timing of the monofin stroke but it is vital that you do your best to make your body the best possible conduit for the undulation by improving your overall strength and flexibility. Exercises like Yoga and Pilates that use slow dynamic stretches and body-weight exercises are perfect for cross-training. An underwater video camera is also a great tool for evaluating your own stroke.

You’ll learn how to choose a monofin, how to descended gracefully, ascend effortlessly, and swim through the water as if it wasn’t even there. Safely. As your skills grow, you’ll learn routines and movements that will entertain and mesmerize audiences.
